Why You Should Use Winter Tires?

Share

Icy roads and thick snow can make it really difficult to control your car. If you want to reach your destination safely, you need to make sure that all parts of your car are working properly. This includes using tires that work best in winter conditions. In some areas, the use of winter tires is regulated and you need to check the local law about this. If you find that winter tires are mandatory, you need to save money, so you can purchase them before the winter arrives. Winter tires are not the same with regular, all season tires. They have different rubber compound that performs better in very cold temperature and icy roads. When you use winter roads, you will eventually have better traction and handling. Winter tires can allow for safe driving, when you drive through thick snow, slippery road or slush.

However, one thing that you need to consider is that, even if you have used winter tires, your car will have worse handling, compared to driving on dry road during the summer. The goal is simply to allow you to get the best possible control, although it doesn’t mean that the handling will be good. One drawback of winter tires is that they can be quite expansive compared to all season tires. If your budget is limited, you may buy four cheap winter tires. They still better than using high quality all season tires during winter. Even so, you need to particularly careful, because cheap cars may not provide good traction. Manufacturers may advertise that their all season tires work well during the winter, but this is often not true.

Both front-wheel and four-wheel drive cars should work well with winter tires. Modern safety features like anti lock brake and traction control should work really well with good quality winter tires. You should make sure that winter tires are maintained properly. In terms of performance and material used, winter tires are different compared to all season tires. Tread wear is common for any type of tires. So, car manufacturers don’t provide warranty for early wear of the tread. Good winter tires should have well designed tread that can expel snow and drain cold water. Good tread will increase friction on slippery road, so you need to check it closely.

Although you use winter tires for a few months in a year, you need to carefully check them. Each month, you should inspect the tread to ensure that they are still working well. You can choose common sense to know whether the tread is still acceptable. Check whether there are punctures that can cause potential leak. If the puncture is still manageable, you can repair it. When using winter tires, you should do proper braking, so you can extend the life of your winter tires. When the road becomes mostly dry during the spring, you can replace winter tires with the all season model again. Check whether these tires are still usable for the next winter, so you can keep and reuse them again.
